“Regarding what is happening in Palestine, we agree that the Israeli occupation of Palestine must be stopped immediately,” House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Puan Maharani noted in a press conference with MIKTA parliamentary representatives here on Monday.
After their meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Palace Complex on Monday, Maharani remarked that MIKTA countries also agreed that humanitarian aid corridors must be opened immediately to deal with the impact of conflict, especially for victims of war in the Gaza Strip.
“We agreed that what is happened in Palestine and Ukraine must be resolved immediately, so that peace can be established on Earth,” she remarked.
As chair of the MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation meeting this year, Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace in Palestine, which has been in the international spotlight for more than a month due to the conflict between Israel and the Hamas group.
With the consultative forum of the five middle-power countries, Maharani believed that their support for Palestine could be echoed throughout the world.
“MIKTA, as one of the middle power countries’ organizations in the world, agrees that peace in the world is very important, and we will maintain it together,” she affirmed.
Since Israel bombarded Gaza on October 7, 2023, more than 12 thousand Palestinians have died, including 8,300 women and children, and more than 30 thousand others have been injured.
Thousands of buildings, including hospitals, mosques, and churches, in Gaza were damaged or destroyed.
The Israeli blockade has cut off fuel, electricity, and water, including humanitarian aid supplies to Gaza.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Israel reached 1,200.
